IF ELEGANCE WERE A VOICE
Piotr Beczala is one of the most acclaimed tenors of our time and a recurring performer in the world's most important opera houses. The artist, born in Poland, stands out not only for the beauty of his voice but also for his strong commitment to each character he plays. Always impeccable and attentive to detail, his voice has a truly unique timbre. Throughout his fruitful operatic career, he has performed a large part of the classical vocal repertoire with the world's most distinguished orchestras and conductors, but Piotr Beczala's musical work also includes a variety of concerts that further expand his already rich repertoire. Initially devoted to Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti and lyrical roles by Verdi, Janácek and Strauss, to name a few, the tenor has slowly been adding to his repertoire other roles such as the male protagonists of Lohengrin (Wagner), Aida (Verdi) and Turandot (Puccini). This will be the third appearance of Piotr Beczala at the Peralada Festival, after the 2014 inaugural concert in which he performed alongside Erika Grimaldi and his debut on the stage of the Carme Church in 2012. This time, the tenor will present a recital alongside the pianist Sarah Tysman with a first part dedicated to the composer Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky and a second part to the great opera arias of Moniuszko, Dvořák, Verdi and Puccini . Welcome to a new edition!

TRANSCENDING TRADITIONAL BOUNDARIES
Carlos Acosta brings his Cuban dance company back to the Peralada Festival. The programme showcases the versatility of talented dancers from both classical and modern dance backgrounds. Folcror focuses on its Cuban roots, full of African, Spanish, Latin American and European influences, and represents the melting pot that is Cuba. The result is Acosta's personal identity where the rich Cuban culture clearly emerges. Here Carlos Acosta has collaborated with the famous Swedish choreographer Pontus Lidberg in his work Paysage, Soudain, la nuit. Lidberg celebrates youth between nightfall and dawn to a rumba-inspired score by Leo Brouwer. Seventeen minutes of pure infectious energy and Latin footwork set to frantic traditional music. By Spanish choreographer Rafael Bonachela, Soledad is an elegant, sexy and emotionally charged duet. It explores the wild and tender sides of a relationship, as well as Spanish roots to the music of Mexican singer Chavela Vargas and Gidon Kremer's homage to Piazzolla. The evening concludes with Hybrid, by Cuban choreographers Norge Cedeño and Thais Suárez. The energy and skill of the dancers is illustrated while seamlessly blending the African traditions of the Yoruba with a strongly contemporary dance.

ANNA PIROZZI

VOCAL VIRTUOSITY
This Neapolitan soprano is one of the greatest voices in Italian opera of our times. Her dramatic coloratura register has earned her the opportunity to play the major roles of Verdi, although her repertoire ranges from bel canto to verismo. A chameleon singer with an impressive repertoire, her career began to shine at the Salzburg Festival, where she performed Abigaille from Nabucco under the direction of Riccardo Muti in 2013 – an overwhelming success that soon put her on the world's biggest stages. Recently, Anna Pirozzi was awarded the Puccini Prize of the Torre de Lago Puccini Festival, which has awarded the prize to such important names as Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Tebaldi and Birgit Nilsson. With the concert Addio mio dolce amor. Il maestro Puccini e l'opera italiana, Pirozzi returns to the Peralada Festival after her impressive debut in 2022 playing one of her go-to roles, that of the former slave who appears to be the daughter of Nabucco. This time, together with a string quartet and accompanied by Sophia Muñoz on the piano, the soprano will perform a programme of opera arias by Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi and Leoncavallo, but especially by the master of emotions, Giacomo Puccini.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF ENGLISH MUSIC
Jordi Savall is one of the most versatile musical personalities of his generation. For more than fifty years since he has been unearthing the marvellous musical worlds abandoned to obscurity through indifference and oblivion. Dedicated to researching these ancient musics, he reads, interprets and conducts them. His activity as concert performer, teacher, researcher and creator of new musical and cultural works place him among the principal architects of the phenomenon of the rediscovery of historical music. With Montserrat Figueras, he founded the musical groups Hespèrion XXI (1974, formerly Hespèrion XX), the Chapel Royal of Catalonia (1987) and Concert of the Nations (1989) with whom he explores and creates a universe of beauty and feeling, as he brings them to the world and to millions of lovers of music. This year, the master of the viola da gamba presents "The fire and the tears of the muses", a programme featuring Renaissance composers and instrumentalists from the Elizabethan period, such as Christopher Tye, William Byrd, Richard Nicholson and John Dowland. Ancient, faraway songs that will be performed by the Hespèrion XXI ensemble, an inescapable reference for understanding the evolution of music during the period spanning from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, which, together with the voices of Elionor Martínez and William Shelton and the direction of Jordi Savall, will make it possible for the public to naturally enjoy the spiritual and aesthetic delicateness of that time.

YUNCHAN LIM

THE YOUNG PIANIST WHO DECIDED TO LEAVE EVERYTHING BEHIND FOR MUSIC
Lim made an impact on the world of music last year, when he made history at the age of 18 by becoming the youngest winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition held in Texas. Lim's final performance of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 not only moved even the orchestra conductor, Marin Alsop, to tears, but also went viral on YouTube, with more than 12 million views, becoming the performance with the most views on the platform. Critics also praised his surprising performance, claiming that 'a star is born' (The New York Times). Yunchan was catapulted into the headlines and rose to fame even beyond the world of classical music, while he became a national hero in his home country, South Korea, overnight. Yunchan's rise in the world of classical music has been meteoric, and the leading stages around the world are courting him, like his anxiously-awaited début at Carnegie Hall and performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of Paris and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with musical director Vasily Petrenko. Both critics and audiences alike have fallen in love with his performances, from his captivating appearances on renowned stages like Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall and the Hollywood Bowl to his celebrated London début at Wigmore Hall.  After releasing his first album post-competition--which features a live recording of the 'Emperor' Piano Concerto No. 5 by Beethoven with the Gwangju Symphony Orchestra, which went platinum in a matter of hours--Lim recently signed an exclusive recording deal with Decca. This spring, the Festival Peralada is bringing this young pianist, who has the world eating out of his hands, for his début in Spain with a performance of Frédéric Chopin's Études.

A TRIP TO PESARO WITH THE INCOMPARABLE ROSSINI
Two of the most important Rossini voices of our age. At the age of sixteen, Sara Blanch performed for the first time in a contemporary opera at the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya and made her debut at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro (Italy) in 2013. Having been recognised in several competitions, most notably the Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition (2014) and the Tenor Viñas competition (2016), where she won eight prizes, we have been able to follow her through several renowned theatres and festivals, having now performed more than twenty-seven operatic roles in total. She was the first resident artist of the Peralada Festival in 2016 and this summer she returns crowned as the great Rossini diva. Recently, the soprano debuted with a solo recital at the Palau de la Música Catalana, the last concert of the Palau Grans Veus series, to overwhelming success. In September 2024, we will see her long-awaited debut at the Teatro Alla Scalla in Milan, considered the most iconic opera house in the world and one of the most prestigious on the international scene. The Italian baritone Paolo Bordogna is an internationally renowned singer considered one of the best buffi of his generation for his flexibility as an interpreter and his theatrical skills. His wide baritone range has led him to perform more than fifty roles from as far back as the 16th century and as recent as the contemporary era, and is highly demanded for his specialty in bel canto and buffo roles. A regular guest of the Rossini Opera Festival since 2005, Bordogna has performed in many prestigious operatic coliseums. The two soloists, accompanied on the piano by Giulio Zappa, will pay tribute to the brilliant composer, the swan of Pesaro, with great arias from his famous operas in an evening that promises to be unforgettable.

MUSIC RELOADED
In today's society, being under 40 and dedicating yourself to composing "classical-contemporary" music goes against the grain and takes courage. And even more so if you're a woman. At the heart of this programme is Helena Cánovas' Intorno a due vermiglie e vaghe labbra, based on a madrigal by Monteverdi. We have asked our young composers to revisit Renaissance polyphony and counterpoint and reshape them through their own language. At Music Reloaded you are encouraged to download, process and, above all, reload. The musical language of Xavier García Cardona, Joan Magrané, Carlos Prat, Helena Cánovas and Josep Ollé will dialogue with compositions by Alonso Lobo, Madalena Casulana and Claudio Monteverdi in a concert that will also include premieres by Aurora Bauzà and Pere Jou and a new Madrigal by Anna Campany. The result of this commission from the Peralada Festival, under the direction of Júlia Sesé and with the participation of the Chamber Choir of the Palau de la Música, is a young and innovative concert that honours Western choral music tradition.

DON JUAN NO EXISTE

DON JUAN NO EXISTE
In the early 20th century, a countess attends a performance of Don Giovanni accompanied by two of her closest friends. She admires the scenery, the characters, but fails to connect with the piece. However, she does get a sudden creative impulse: to write her very own Don Juan. We join Carmen Díaz de Mendoza Aguado, the Countess of San Luis, at her desk. She starts to write, and it is not only her own voice that she hears, but that of her insecurities, of society and even of a ghost that stops her. She is alone, even though her friend Miguel is close to her, and he doesn't understand why she needs to proceed with this strange project. The premiere is a failure. In 2024, a new creator is trying to complete an opera and trying to piece together what happened with the premiere of Carmen Díaz de Mendoza Aguado's Don Juan no existe. She has found newspaper clippings about the premiere, but there is hardly anything left about the countess. Not even the text remains; it has to be invented in order to talk about her. Again, the antagonistic voice appears. But this time it is different; it does not cause the author to falter. They talk. She asks, why are you looking so hard for this countess? But the author remains determined and will continue her search. This is how Helena Cánovas Parés' opera came about. It is commissioned by Festival Peralada and co-produced by the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Teatro Real opera houses for having won the second Carmen Mateu Young Artist European Award. An opera that pays homage to all those women who have been erased from history simply because they were born women.

A NIGHT OF DANCE WITH CATALAN AND INTERNATIONAL DANCERS AND CREATORS

Creation, destruction and regeneration are synonyms that beat deeply in the lands of Peralada. The action of ploughing brings with it the regeneration of the fields and of life itself, a symbolic parallel that converses with the current reconstruction process of the festival itself, as a result of which new dynamics, proposals and creations are being born and will continue to be born. To create is to enter a space that opens the door to an imaginary, hidden world, a process that germinates, as if from a seed, new forms, physicalities, concepts and concerns. To create is to give shape to the invisible. Dance is the secret language of the soul. Today, when we think of the great artistic legacy that choreographers like Marius Petipa, Vaslav Nijinksy or Martha Graham have left us, it might seem a little strange to think that all these works, before turning into the well-known classics they are today, not to mention milestones in the history of dance, were born from small ideas, stories or inspirations. Bringing together eleven Catalan and European dancers, including Martí Paixà (principal dancer of the Stuttgart Ballett), Lorena Nogal (choreographer, assistant and dancer at the Veronal), Albert Hernández (principal dancer of the National Ballet of Spain and choreographer at the Venidera) and Aleix Martínez (principal dancer of the Hamburg Ballett and choreographer), and works by creators such as John Neumeier, Lorena Nogal, Marco Goecke, Albert Hernández and Aleix Martínez, Terra llaurada aims to be a night of dance dedicated to this small creative seed, to the spark that contains the power to light a fire.

YUJA WANG

Sunday, 11/08/2024 20:00

SPONTANEITY AND INTERPRETATIVE FREEDOM
The talented and charismatic pianist Yuja Wang enchants her audience in every one of her performances. Both extremely sweet and incredibly fierce, she is a dazzling, masterful interpreter, with a subtle and spirited talent that gives her the prodigious musical balance necessary for spinning classical music into a language as fresh and relevant as modern rock. Thought to be one of the best pianists of her generation, Wang is also known for her fearless theatrical style and her interpretations of 20th century piano works by artists such as Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Scriabin. She started playing when she was six years old and, at twenty-one, she was already a well-known concert piano player around the world. However, her road to fame began quite early when, at age eleven, she won the third prize in the Ettlingen International Music Competition in Germany for Young Pianists. In 2001, she participated in the first International Music Competition in Sendai (Japan), winning the third prize in the piano section and also obtaining the special prize of the jury, given to the most distinguished finalist under twenty years old. Since then, she has performed all over the world and recorded a number of best-selling albums. She is now highly sought after by all the greatest classical concert halls. With her debut, the Peralada Festival also made its wish come true.
