ORCHESTRA AND CONDUCTOR IN PERFECT COMMUNION WITH A UNIQUE GUEST
Throughout the history of the Castell de Peralada Festival, audiences have savoured countless nights where symphonic music has shone with its own star. The list of conductors and orchestras that have performed at the Alt Empordà festival is as long as it is surprising. This year, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and its acclaimed music director Tugan Sokhiev will be making their début at the Festival. Music director and conductor also of Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, Sokhiev is one of the conductors most in demand in opera houses and orchestras all over the world. His arrival ten years ago as conductor of the French orchestra responsible for the symphony season at the historic Halle aux Grains and for the opera and choreography season at the Théâtre du Capitole have led to the orchestra being regularly invited to appear at a great many festivals of recognised international acclaim. In Peralada, they will be performing Prèlude à l’Après-Midi d’un Faune by Claude Debussy, Pictures at an Exhibition (with orchestration by Maurice Ravel) by Modest Mussorgsky and Four Last Songs (Vier letzte Lieder) by Richard Strauss. For the occasion, acclaimed soprano of an intense musicality and vocal flexibility Iréne Theorin, who performed the leading role in Turandot last year in the festival's new opera production under the stage management of Mario Gas, is appearing to perform the German composer's songs for the first time. An evening that will no doubt live on in the memory of music lovers.

Semi-Staged Opera
Concert with stage movement

Saturday, 15/07/2017 20:00

SEMI-STAGED OPERA; It is a concert with stage movement
PURCELL'S MASTERPIECE PERFORMED FOR THE EUROPEAN GENERATIONAL RELIEF
The director associated with Les Arts Florissants, Paul Agnew, will be conducting the 22nd Ambronay European Baroque Academy and presenting a stunning programme at Peralada inspired by the story of Dido with extracts from the opera Didon by Henry Desmarest and the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell. The love story between the queen of Carthage and the Trojan warrior inspired the great English composer Purcell to create a timeless work that is still performed today at the world's leading opera houses.  The modest proportions (shorter than an hour with a reduced orchestra) make it the perfect theme for a training programme for young musicians. The music is excellent from start to end; from the overture in the à la française style to Dido's final lament, When I Am Laid in Earth. Agnew has selected different extracts from Desmarest's Didon to open the programme. A tragic opera that is not performed very often, but in its time was very well received at the première at the Académie Royale de Musique in 1693, just four years after Purcell's opera. The music is truly beautiful and the libretto offers the lead performer a wonderful portrait of a woman. A performance that is the public dissemination of an education project that brings together young musicians – selected from the best in Europe – and who are part of this Academy, is coming to the Festival. Peralada is the only performance in Spain of this incredible education project.

KATIE MELUA

Saturday, 15/07/2017 22:00

THE SENSUALITY OF A UNIQUE VOICE
Katie Melua burst onto the British music scene when she released her first album, Call off the Search. Discovered by music producer Mike Batt, her voice broke moulds and earned her a privileged place in the competitive world of pop music, becoming a superstar filling auditoriums in her wake. Throughout her career, she has been bold with her velvet sweet voice; from gentle jazz, blues and soul ballads to covers of Blowin in the Wind by Bob Dylan, All over the World by Françoise Hardy and The Way That You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra. Backed by her band, the evocative voice of this British singer of Georgian origin returns to the Festival in a concert full of her greatest hits, including Symphony, Walls of the World, Better than a Dream, Moonshine, If You Were a Sailboat, Nine Million Bicycles and Walls of the World. With the shyness that is so characteristic of her on stage, Melua and her guitar will once again conquer audiences at the Festival.

La Straordinaria vita di SUGAR BLOOD

de Demestres

Thursday, 20/07/2017 21:00

A SWEET SUGAR-FREE OPERA TO NOURISH SOCIAL AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE OF DIABETES

La Straordinaria vita di Sugar Blood by Alberto García-Demestres is the title of the new opera premiere of the summer. The Castell de Peralada Festival has been and continues to be a venue open to creation, a place that accepts a challenge and above all supports the genre by commissioning new scores to contemporary composers and by programming new musical projects. In this sense, the Barcelona-born composer is now a long-standing well-known name at Peralada. Here, he has debuted 15X15X15 –fifteen scenes for orchestra, a commission by Peralada to commemorate the Festival’s 15th anniversary–, the world premiere of the opera Wow!, and the premiere of the aria for soprano Cocco e Cocomero, of La Straordinaria vita di Sugar Blood. This new opera, with a libretto by Cristina Pavarotti and Demestres himself, is conceived to be staged in a large format and has been dedicated to Luciano Pavarotti, the father and friend of the two librettists, respectively. Peralada will be offering the concert version of this work, featuring the voices of Sara Blanch, Joan Martín-Royo, Antoni Comas, Mireia Pintó, Neus Roig, choir soloists Ariadna Ruiz, Lisa Campos and Núria Prats, and the VIVALDI-IPSI Choir, all under the baton of García Demestres himself. This opera tells the story of Sugar Blood, a brave girl who is diagnosed with diabetes at age 7. She is a heroine of our times who endures her complicated reality with a great smile and is capable of transforming the difficulties of her situation with enthusiasm, without ever ceasing to dream. The project features the special collaboration of Chef Jordi Roca from the prestigious Girona restaurant El Celler de Can Roca, who has created Cocco E Cocomero, a dessert suitable for diabetics, just for the occasion.

THE FAIRYTALE OF THE YEAR FOR A NIGHT OF DANCE FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY
In the wake of a total success on different stages around Europe, for the first time ever, French choreographer Thierry Malandain will be bringing to Catalonia his own particular reading of Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s tale (1740), popularised by the abbreviated version by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont (1756). Malandain has captivated both audiences and critics with this show that combines an apparently simple staging with live music based on a Tchaikovsky score and performed by the Basque Symphony Orchestra. An original performance with a great deal of symbolism and a wardrobe that blends classicism with the avant-garde, wonderfully delicate virtuoso movement to the service of an evocative choreography. Coming to the festival is a dance performance that will carry the viewer off to the world of the fairytale, the world of fantasy and imagination, a place where everything is possible and where love can emerge between a beautiful young woman and an apparently ferocious beast. All the ingredients are in place, to serve up a fairytale night at the Castell de Peralada Festival.

JULIETTE BINOCHE AND ALEXANDRE THARAUD TOGETHER IN MEMORY OF BARBARA
Ma plus belle histoire d’amour, Dis, quand reviendras-tu?, L’Aigle noir (later covered in Catalan by Maria Mar Bonet), Nantes (covered in Catalan by Guillermina Motta with adaptation by Delfí Abella), La solitude and Une petite cantate are some of the huge hits of French singer Barbara. The year that marks the twentieth anniversary of Barbara's death, the most international French actress, Juliette Binoche, and the great pianist exponent of a huge repertoire, Alexandre Tharaud, come together again in Vaille que Vivre (Barbara). A show created around the memories of Barbara and which will première on 23 July at the prestigious Festival d’Avignon, just before disembarking in Peralada. The two artists say that they have a close and deep tie with the grande-dame of French chanson; a bond that has been forged over time, as Barbara has accompanied them throughout their lives. For this reason, and with the wish to pay a warm tribute filled with humility, today they ask themselves about her absence, about the vacuum that the singer has left in their lives. They have chosen the texts and the music together in a simply staged yet hugely emotive show. On stage, the award-winning and prestigious actress will recite texts that seek to bring Barbara's words to life. The performer of the soundtrack to ”Amour” by Michael Haneke will attempt to cast light on Barbara's music and its extreme richness through his performances on the piano, some in a minimalist spirit. A night to remember.

THE VOICE THAT REACHES THE STARS
Since winning the Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition (2009) and shining in every category in the Hans Gabor Belvedere International Singing Competition (2009) and the Operalia Competitions (2011), this South African soprano has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the peak of the opera world. At just 32, she has sung in the leading opera houses in Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Hamburg, Paris, Milan, Zurich, Vienna and many more, and along the way she has won over audiences and critics in equal measure. Yende's story is a modern fairy tale; she used to sing in her church choir and was studying to become an accountant when one day, at the age of 16, she heard Lakmé's Flower Duet in a television advert for British Airways and became fascinated by its beauty. Discovering that it was from an opera, she decided to change direction and become an opera singer.  She very quickly secured a grant with Virginia Davis and in 2010 she made her début at La Scala in Milan. Her roles include Lucia from Lucia di Lammermoor, Juliet in Roméo et Juliette, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Adina in The Elixir of Love and Elvira in I Puritani. This year, Pretty Yende will be making her Castell de Peralada Festival début with a recital of short songs. A golden opportunity to enjoy this exceptional coloratura soprano.

MUSIC IN TIMES OF UPHEAVAL: NATIONALIST IMPETUS FROM THE ROMANTIC TRADITION

The history of the festival cannot be understood without the presence of great piano soloists and virtuosos. This year, Peralada welcomes pianist Ignasi Cambra, who, despite his youth, has already been invited to numerous festivals and has played at such venues as the Weill Recital Hall in New York and the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, and who is currently working with pianist Maria Joao Pires on her Partitura Project. Acclaimed conductor Valery Gergiev said of him "he is someone who can talk to me through the piano". In Peralada he will be presenting a programme with works by Chopin, Grieg and Granados. A little over a hundred years ago, major music and aesthetic movements emerged, influenced by times of upheaval where national identities and new ideologies blurred the outlines of Europe. An age where romanticism, nationalism and new modernist airs grew and evolved as artistic current, giving shape to the work of these three great composers. In Peralada, Cambra will be journeying through the mutual influences among these late-nineteenth-century musicians, who sought inspiration in the cultural roots of their countries. From the romantic tradition of Chopin, through the modernist nationalism of Grieg, to the late-romantic nationalism of Granados. An inspiring journey, with pieces such as the Nocturnes and Impromptus by Frederic Chopin, the Holberg Suite by Eduard Grieg and the Poetic Waltzes by Granados. The musical expressiveness of Ignasi Cambra comes to Peralada.

Orquestra Victoria de los Angeles

Friday, 4/08/2017 20:00

PUCCINI, THE FEMALE UNIVERSE
The soprano from Guipúzcoa is without a doubt one of this summer event's most emblematic artists. Her début at the Carmen Church, accompanied by the Victoria de los Ángeles Orchestra, is one of the must-see concerts for the Festival's music-loving audiences. Etched on our memory is The Secret Marriage by Cimarosa with baritone Carlos Álvarez, or her Violetta Valery in La Traviata However, her participation in the festival doesn't end here, as Arteta has sung from Lied to Latin American songs at the festival and has even ventured into great pop, rock and jazz songs on her autobiographical album, La Vida. Now having a matured, Arteta will be singing again at the festival as a great Puccini performer. To mark the tenth anniversary of the Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation, the foundation will show audiences an unseen and unknown side to the soprano: Victoria was a prolific writer of poetry, not a poet, but during her life she wrote many poems, some of which were a tribute to the heroines in Puccini's work. During the concert and in homage to the great soprano from Barcelona, the young composer Pedro Pardo will be premièring two poems from her poetry legacy. The young newly-created Victoria de los Ángeles Orchestra, which made its début in January at the TNC, will bring a touch of music to the evening during which the two sopranos will join together in their love for the composer from Lucca.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY

Monday, 7/08/2017 22:00

Its story and a music that cut straight to the heart and the emotions have turned this piece into one of the most iconic and key operas of the classical repertoire. The "Japanese tragedy" of the maestro Puccini lands in Peralada under the watchful gaze of stage director Joan Anton Rechi, who will be offering a disturbing and emotional piece situated in the poetic universe of destruction. The story, set in the darkest period of the city of Nagasaki during the Second World War, turns the tragedy that affects the female protagonist immersed in desolation into a collective tragedy, which affects all the characters in the story. The combination of an exceptional vocal repertoire, the quality of the music and a renewed staging turn this opera, without a doubt, into an unmissable date this summer.

The singer from Madrid is especially famous for her powerful and painstaking live performances, which have taken her to the best venues in sell-out concerts. JAMES RHODES

Friday, 11/08/2017 22:00

THE ROCK STAR OF CLASSICAL MUSIC MAKES HIS DEBUT AT THE FESTIVAL
From the very first moment that James Rhodes appears on stage, the pianist makes it clear to the audience that his concert is not going to fall into any of the conventions of this type of recital. Unruly hair, jeans, T-shirt and trainers is the usual dress style for his performances, whatever the stage hosting him, and if anything defines this performer, it is his strong desire to bring classical music to people, especially young audiences. In his impressive honest and moving autobiography Instrumental (published by Canongate), he affirms his desire to "free music from the tyranny of idiots", and the truth is that Rhodes is much more than a successful pianist, he is, above all, a communicator who holds nothing back in his own extraordinary story. His childhood was ended by horrific events. Events that led him to personal troubles, a tendency towards self-destruction, constant hospital admissions, admissions to drugs, alcohol and razor blades... a free fall to the demons that would have ended his life had classical music not saved him, as he has stated on various occasions. The music that is able to restore life is the music that the British pianist will be playing in the concert; the tough but incredibly creative and happy life of Bach; the disturbing passions of Beethoven; the sick and dysfunctional relationship between Chopin and George Sand... The classical music that still calls out to our deepest emotions today despite having been composed centuries ago. James Rhodes, uncovered, comes to Peralada.

DIEGO EL CIGALA

THE MAESTRO OF FUSION RETURNS WITH AN INDESTRUCTIBLE “SALSA” PROJECT
It was only a matter of time. With Lágrimas Negras, not only did Diego El Cigala put Bolero back in the global spotlight, but he opened the door to a new world of collaboration and fusion between Flamenco and Latin music. In a personal and extraordinary interpretation of this almost forgotten music, he seduced Flamenco and Latin music lovers, as well as hundreds of thousands of people who did not fit any of these stereotypes. The door was open, and in that moment, Diego's wife Amparo realised that El Cigala's talent could create music that in its day had also conquered the world and which now seemed to be relegated to Latin audiences, namely Salsa. This is how Indestructible was born. A visual journey through the history of salsa, which has led El Cigala along the open paths of Colombia and New York, through Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Miami, recording part of the album in each destination and which has seen the collaboration of over 70 musicians of different nationalities, who have all brought their essence to this project. A journey culminating in Jerez de la Frontera with the additions of guitar, vocals, cajón and palmas. With Indestructible, Diego once again showcases his huge and unlimited musical personality, performing such songs as Periódico de Ayer, Juanito Alimaña, El Ratón, Conversación en Tiempo de Bolero, Como Fue and Indestructible. After his début in the Festival alongside Tomatito in 2009, El Cigala returns to Peralada more indestructible than ever.

JARABE DE PALO RETURNS TO THE STAGE WITH FLAGSHIP MUSIC
It seems just yesterday that La flaca sang out from radios around the world. But in fact twenty years have gone by. Twenty years of songs, albums, concerts. Twenty years during which Jarabe de Palo has brought music to many of our lives. The same year that Pau Donés turns fifty and Jarabe de Palo twenty, the Latino rock band will be celebrating with the launch of their new project and a new tour. The new album, entitled 50 palos, contains 21 of their most popular songs in piano and voice versions, and also includes the previously unheard song: Humo. The tour, which began in Mexico in March, will continue in the United States, Spain and Italy and end the year in Latin America. Over seventy concerts with songs such as Depende, Grita, Agua, Bonito, El lado oscuro, Déjame vivir and La flaca. After almost a three-year break, the full band will be celebrating their twenty years together the best way, on stage playing the most popular songs from their repertoire as though time had stood still.
