MARIA PAGES COMPAÑIA

Una oda al tiempo

Friday, 20/07/2018 22:00

DIALOGUE WITH MEMORY
“We all know that the spirit of dance lives in María Pagés and we all shout it from the rooftops. But there is something more in this woman: she dances and, by dancing, she moves everything that surrounds her. Neither the air nor the earth are the same after María Pagés has danced.” -  José Saramago, Nobel Prize.
María Pagés has made dance and flamenco her poetic homeland. Tireless creator, iconoclast by nature, she is a pioneer in understanding flamenco as an art in constant evolution, contemporary, living, generous and hospitable, yet without ever renouncing the use of the essential codes of the language of the genre and drinking from the tradition of those who came before her as a source of inspiration. In Una Oda al Tiempo (An Ode to Time), María Pagés presents a necessary dialogue with memory. With the professional and life experience garnered over the years, and including reflections by Plato, Margaret Yourcenar, Jorge Luis Borges, John Cage, Octavio Paz, Heidegger, Marcel Duchamp and Pablo Neruda, the choreographer and bailaora from Seville reflects on the implacable irreversibility of time, on the body, desire, art and life itself, and she does so by presenting herself to the audience as what she is: a woman, a beautiful human being through her imperfect humanity. Accompanied on stage by four male bailaoras, four female bailaores and seven musicians, and with the playwriting and texts of El Arbi El Harti, the artist interacts on stage with her flamenco memory through a choreography that speaks to us of the ephemeral, the permanent or the eternal in an intimate and sincere exchange. Through twelve scenes that recreate twelve flamenco palos or styles, María Pagés and her company will once again turn asymmetries into a source of beauty and emotion. Because for María Pagés this is the principal function of art.

French Touch

Saturday, 21/07/2018 22:00

ENGLISH WITH A TOUCH OF FRANÇAISE
The glamorous nationalised French Italian singer-songwriter will be making her Peralada début on 21 July with her latest album, French Touch. An album produced by legendary musician, producer and composer David Foster, the idea for which took root in 2014 when Bruni and Foster met after a concert in Los Angeles and he offered to produce an album for her entirely in English. Chosen for their personal meaning, the album is a collection of eleven songs that as the artist herself explains, “inspire the French idea of love at first sight, a coup de foudre”. Created alongside her loyal musicians Taofik, Cyril and Vernerey and the unique participation of guitarist Dean Parks and drummer Jim Keltner, Carla Bruni has been bold; from Enjoy The Silence (1990) by Depeche Mode as a folk song, to the Rolling Stones classic Miss You (1978), with a Latino-Italian disco style accompanied by a flamenco guitar, or covering the Clash’s hit Jimmy Jazz  (1979), and a New Orleans march right through to a perfect song such as Perfect Day (1972) by Lou Reed suddenly transformed into a Parisian waltz, and Highway to Hell (1979) by heavy metal group AC/DC. Songs made personal and introspective by Bruni, giving them her inimitable and enchanting acoustic and melancholic style. “I’ve changed so many things, I’ve adapted these songs so much that I feel they’re mine,” she says. Each song retains the universal attraction of the originals, but with a touch of French Chic from Carla Bruni.

SILVER ANNIVERSARY AT PERALADA
In 1992, the same year in which he made his début at the Gran Teatre del Liceu alongside none other than soprano Edita Gruberova in the role of Percy in Donizetti’s Anna Bolena, Josep Bros sang at the sixth edition of the recently inaugurated Castell de Peralada International Music Festival, with a recital dedicated to composer Giacchino Rossini. This summer, and after celebrating his twenty-five-year career with a recital at the Catalan coliseum, tenor Josep Bros returns to the Alt Empordà festival where he debuted a quarter of a century ago before an audience that loves him and knows him well. At Peralada we have seen him in the Elisir d’amore by Donizetti, Messa da Requiem by Verdi, Marina by Emilio Arrieta, Luisa Fernanda by Moreno Torroba, in a lyric gala with Leo Nucci, and in Norma by Bellini. A series of performances that are also a good representation of his highly successful career. His great musicality has also enabled him to embrace a hugely expansive repertoire; from bel canto in the most emblematic Mozart roles, French opera and, most recently, operas such as La Bohème, Simon Boccanegra, Un ballo in maschera and Don Carlo. Accompanied on the piano by Marco Evangelisti and with a special programme designed for the occasion with works by Tosti, Donizetti, Bellini, Mercadante, Verdi, Massenet, Bizet, Leoncavallo, Ponchielli and Cilea, Bros returns to Peralada to celebrate his silver anniversary.

RINALDO

Sunday, 5/08/2018 20:00

REDISCOVERING A COLOSSAL OPERA
Rinaldo is one of the most famous operas by Georg Friedrich Handel and the first one composed specifically for the London stage. In a year when one of the leitmotivs of the festival is the essence of the Baroque, we simply could not omit this title from the programme of a festival whose passion is voices and lyrical singing. The work, with a libretto by Giacomo Rossi, is based on the famous epic poem Gerusalemme liberata by Torquato Tasso and tells the love story between the Christian warrior Rinaldo and Almirena set during the first crusade against the Ottoman Empire. Leading the project is counter-tenor Xavier Sabata, who as well as taking on the role of Rinaldo, also directs and has created the concept of the show which comes to the festival for the first time in concert format and which will be performed in the 1711 version, which is rarely seen nowadays. This version does not include the great aria Lascia ch’io pianga, but it does contain other well-known ones together with some of Handel's most famous arias, such as Or la tromba in suon festante, Cor ingrato (which features in the festival’s promotional video performed by Xavier Sabata and Dani Espasa on harpsichord), Furie terribili and cara sposa. Other members of this extraordinary cast include Núria Rial, Juan Sancho, Hillary Summers, Mary-Elen Nesi and Josep Ramon Olivé. Dani Espasa on harpsichord, will be conducting the Vespres d’Arnadí Baroque orchestra.

THE MAGIC FLUTE

Monday, 6/08/2018 22:00

THE MAIDEN VOYAGE OF ORIOL BROGGI
Throughout its history, the Peralada Festival has premièred a significant number of in-house productions and world premières in the world of opera. And it’s no secret that many of these commissions were awarded to theatre directors who had had no experience of the classical genre. The more outstanding examples include Calixto Bieito with Bizet’s Carmen; the staging of The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, by Debussy and D’Annuzio with La Fura dels Baus; Carlos Santos and his production of The Barber of Seville, by Rossini; and Comediants and their colourful Orfeo ed Euridice, by Gluck. Well, for this edition the festival has commissioned a version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute from the acclaimed Oriol Broggi. In this sense, the theatre director says: “I’m making my opera début with this fantastic commission, the staging of The Magic Flute as part of the Peralada Festival. Just like Tamino, I’ll let myself be transported and go deep into the Kingdom of the Night, I’ll look for love and even try and sleep with you.” Starting with an almost bare stage, with an orchestra at the centre of it, solemn singers slowly being to emerge as they recount the adventures. Broggi presents “a magical, complex and yet simple adventure that has intrigued me ever since I was young, when my parents helped me discover it. This fascinating children's story that hides symbols and interpretations behind the many hidden clues in the score and libretto. I’ll be starting from an almost empty stage, I’ll take the music and voice and make them the protagonists. By interweaving these elements, the story will start to take shape, it’ll become…” As the protagonists of this singspiel, Peralada has a cast of top-flight voices; tenor Liparit Avetisyan, baritone Adrian Ërod, soprano Kathryn Lewk and two outstanding Castell de Peralada Festival Prizes in the Viñas Competition; sopranos Olga Kulchynska (2015) and Anais Constans (2017). Mercedes Gancedo, Anna Alàs, Francisco Vas and Andreas Bauer complete the vocal section. Accompanied by the resident line-ups at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, directed by its resident conductor Josep Pons, it promises to be an evening of great emotions. Broggi concludes: I’ll try and explain the sensation of smallness I feel when performing Mozart’s music. I’ll try and achieve a balance between reason and emotion that his music awakens in me. And through this theatricality, I’ll ensure that it creates a perfect link between music and singing. I’ll enter and depart from the Night so I can share the experience with you.”

ACIS & GALATEA

Wednesday, 8/08/2018 22:00

THE METAMORPHOSIS OF A UNIQUE SPACE
Acis and Galatea was Handel’s most popular dramatic work in his lifetime, musically regarded to be one of the best examples of English opera, following in the wake of Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas and Blow's Venus & Adonis. Composed from the libretto by John Gay, based on the episode from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, this pastoral opera is composed so that nature has a leading presence both in the course of the story and in the musical treatment of the orchestra and voices. In Peralada, this treatment will be by Baroque orchestra Vespres d'Arnadí, conducted by Fausto Nardi, and will feature the voices of Roger Padullés, Lucía Martín-Cartón, Víctor Sordo, Hugo Bolívar and Josep-Ramón Olivé. Under the stage direction of the youthful Rafael R. Villalobos, this new Peralada Festival production conveys the nature of the Carme Cloister in Peralada Castle to the staging and seeks to capture its essence and highlight the English nature of this work, regarded a national opera, in the treatment of the characters and the general aesthetic of the show. The story reduced to the love triangle between Galatea, her lover Acis, and the titanic and imposing Polyphemus takes place in an aseptic space with a bed as the sole element in the staging. Villalobos presents a timeless and highly stylised version for the Empordà début of this rising star on the Spanish opera scene.

SILVIA PEREZ CRUZ & MARCO MEZQUIDA

Thursday, 9/08/2018 22:00

CREATIVE FREEDOM OF NAKED BEAUTY

The mutual admiration of Sílvia Pérez Cruz and Marco Mezquida has been the embryo and starting point for this evening… the idea: to create a joint project this summer! From the musical baggage of pianist Marco Mezquida, his great capacity for adaptation and improvisation, and the truth of Sílvia Pérez Cruz in every type of music she plays, beyond genres – be it jazz, fado, flamenco, pop or South American folk – comes this show, in which two ways of seeing and living music fuse and which we’re presenting at the 32nd Castell de Peralada Festival. In August 2009, Sílvia was part of the La Leyenda del Tiempo show, an homage to the great flamenco master Camarón de la Isla and his legendary tribute album to Lorca to mark 30 years since its release. Alongside Duquende and directed by Chicuelo, they created a brave and mould-breaking show, which was premièred in the gardens at Peralada. Since then, Sílvia Pérez Cruz has continued to rise… Currently on tour with Vestida de nit, she returns to the Peralada stage this summer to delight audiences with her versatility. Marco Mezquida performed alongside Alfonso Vilallonga in J’ai deux amours, in summer 2016, a marvellous selection of French chansons masterly performed by this unique duet. A dynamic show, colourful musical theatre with tunes by Vilallonga and versions of French classics in an evening filled with warmth, where the audience will be able to enjoy the magic of the cabaret. Together they are starting a project in Peralada that is for just one night at the moment but that will surely run and run

SANTANA

Saturday, 11/08/2018 22:00

LEGENDARY GUITAR WITH A UNIQUE SOUND
Mexican guitarist Carlos Santana and his band will be appearing at the Castell de Peralada Festival performing a one-off concert, during the Catalan summer, on his Divitanium Tour. A concert that has to be one of the musical events of the year, and Carlos Santana is one of the best, if not the best, guitarist in the world. His genius and inimitable music expresses a level of passion and soul equivalent to the legendary sonic richness of his guitar. For over four decades and with the same number of albums to their name, this band has been a pioneer, transcending musical genres and generational, cultural and geographical frontiers through its work. Its fusion of Afro-Latin-Blues-Jazz-Rock was created long before the term “World Music” was coined, and this legendary group has always been one step ahead of its time. Santana broke on to the music scene in the late 1960s in the San Francisco Bay area and emerged on the world stage with an epic concert at Woodstock in 1969. Since then, the band’s live performances are real lessons in life, full of light, faith and optimism. Get ready for a long night with lots of rock and lots of Santana, author of Soul Sacrifice, María, Corazón Espiando, Smooth, Love, Peace and Happiness, Samba Pa Ti, Mambo and Oye Como Va and many, many more. Santana is coming to Peralada with the promise of a divine experience that just has to be seen at least once in a lifetime.

EL BIS. AN EVENING OF CABARET

with Xavier Sabata

Sunday, 12/08/2018 22:00

THE CURTAIN FALLS AND THE SHOW BEGINS
To mark the 25th anniversary of Golf de Peralada, the festival is inaugurating a new stage: a new setting situated on one of the best terraces of the Hotel Peralada Wine Spa & Golf. A wonderful open-air venue to stage new and exquisite productions for lovers of originality and art writ large. With this in mind, the festival has invited counter-tenor Xavier Sabata – this year’s resident artist – for an evening of cabaret. Alongside stage director Rafael R. Villalobos and with music direction by Dani Espasa, the Sabata-Villalobos tandem presents Encore. A show born after the last encore, when the curtain comes down and the applause becomes a distant echo. Encore proposes a voyeuristic experience, an open window through which to observe the existentialist flood that engulfs the divo in facing their most private insecurities, but also a fun and friendly portrait that humanises this figure. This cabaret is also a cross-disciplinary and anachronistic musical journey that mixes up works by Cavalli, Wagner and Antony and the Johnsons, sprinkled with references ranging from the theatre of the absurd to the films of Sofia Coppola.

SVETLANA ZAKHAROVA

and Bolshoi Stars

Monday, 13/08/2018 22:00

THE BEAUTY OF MOVEMENT BEARS THE NAME OF ZAKHAROVA

Internationally acclaimed Svetlana Zakharova, lead ballerina with the Bolshoi Theatre and star of the Teatro alla Scala ballet, will be presenting Amore at the Peralada Festival, in a single performance, the first in Spain. A leading figure of twenty-first-century ballet, Zakharova is famous not only for her sublime performances of the major classical roles but also for her work in contemporary choreography. For this show, the Russian ballerina has commissioned three world-famous choreographers to create a work that allows her to experiment with both contemporary and classical at the same time. Accompanied by some of the greatest stars of the Bolshoi Theatre, such as Mikhail Lobukhin, Denis Rodkin and Denis Savin, and also by choreographer and dancer Patrick de Bana, the evening begins with Francesca da Ramini by Yuri Possokov, a masterpiece based on Tchaikovsky’s symphonic poem, which focuses on the story of the tragic lovers of Dante’s Inferno in The Divine Comedy. This is followed by Rain Before It Falls by Patrick de Bana, the battle with oneself when faced with the choice between darkness and light, with music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ottorino Respighi and Carlos Quintana-Pina. The evening finishes with Strokes Through The Tail, a hugely fun and delicious piece by Marguerite Donlon to the sound of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40. A unique opportunity to enjoy this goddess of the meticulous.

PETER AND THE WOLF DANCE HIP-HOP

The Petit Peralada presents “Peter and the Wolf with the Brodas Bros”. With the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès and the participation of one of the leading urban culture groups, the Brodas Bros, in collaboration with SonarKids, this project comes to Peralada, combining classical music with hip-hop, urban culture and literature. When Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned to compose a new symphony for children with the aim of cultivating musical sensitivity in schools, little could he have imagined how his musical fable would become a timeless tale. This fresh multidisciplinary show for all the family is born of the same spirit of bringing culture to the very young. A musical journey that transports us to our childhood with a programme including not just Peter and the Wolf but also Prokofiev’s March in B Flat Op. 99 and Ma Mère l’Oye, which Maurice Ravel composed as a piano duet. With choreography and narration by the Brodas Bros, and music direction by musician and composer Pedro Alcalde, the magic of the story comes to Peralada as you’ve never heard it before.

EXPLORING NEW WAYS

Folia will bring down the curtain on the 32nd Alt Empordanès festival. The show commissioned to open Les Nuits de Fourvière features the collaboration of the Castell de Peralada Festival in an original and captivating artistic proposal. Choreographer and stage director Mourad Merzouki, a leading figure in the hip-hop movement of the 1990s, places his work at a crossroads of multiple disciplines. Based around urban dance, Merzouki (who has performed several times at the Mercat de les Flors) explores in Folia the popular rhythms of Italian tarantella with the musicians of Concert de l’Hostel Dieu, under the musical conception of Franck-Emmanuel Comte. In strength and number, they take over an unusual fusion of genres under the umbrella of sharing and generosity. “With Folia, I want to pursue what motivates me in all of my creations: taking risks, confrontation, dialogue with the other. On stage, musicians and dancers come together to give rise to a surprising encounter between Baroque music, hip-hop rhythm and dance,” the stage director explains. Without losing sight of the roots of the movement, its social and geographical origins, this confrontation allows new horizons to be opened up in dance and innovative viewpoints to be attained. A journey from southern Italy to the New World, from the Baroque repertoire to electronic music. A last-night party with the gaze focused on new audiences.
