INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS EXPLORED THROUGH THIS ICONIC HERO
Orlando, written based on the libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece for L'Orlando, overo, La gelosa pazzia by Domenico Scarlatti (1717), which is in turn based on Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto (1532), is the first of three operas by the English composer of German origin based on the epic poem, and was composed for the Royal Academy of Music in 1733. This year, Rafael R. Villalobos has been commissioned to create a new opera production, and he will return to Peralada to direct another Handelesque work.  In honour of the occasion, the festival brings together a cast of acclaimed voices, including countertenor Xavier Sabata (Orlando), soprano Sabina Puértolas (Angelica), baritone Jose Antonio López (Zoroastro), Marie Lys (Dorinda) and Eve-Maud Hubeaux (Medoro). They will be accompanied by the Baroque music ensemble Vespres d’Arnadí, conducted by Dani Espasa from the harpsichord. The young, accomplished regista  from Seville focuses the plot on the love triangle between Angelica, Medoro and Dorinda, three characters usually played by women. Drawing links to Orlando: A Biography (1928) by Virginia Woolf, and The Hours, Michael Cunningham's 1999 Pulitzer Prize winning novel that was brought to the big screen by Stephen Daldry, Villalobos delves into Orlando as “an intimate array of characters, especially the trio of female protagonists, who are under the constant shadow of the hero onto whom they project their own desires”. This bright, musical performance plays with literary and cinematic references, and aims to capture the essence of the world created by the Bloomsbury Group and their influence on contemporary culture.

SILVIA PEREZ CRUZ

Saturday, 31/07/2021 22:00

NO FILTER
Sílvia Pérez Cruz’s latest record is titled Farsa (género imposible), or in English, ‘Farce (an impossible genre)’. The album is mainly made up of new compositions, created by her, in dialogue with other artistic disciplines such as theatre, dance, cinema, poetry and painting. The album shows the artist's exploration into the duality of what we show and what we really are. It looks into how the fragility of our inner selves, and intimacy, can survive during current times when the surface layer is so devastating, when what you see can get confused with what you hear. But her voice, one of the most astounding to have appeared in recent times, always rings true. Without reservation or false pretence, this concert provides possible responses to the questions posed above, and offers a deep journey into the self through music. With special collaboration from dancer and choreographer Andrés Corchero on stage, the artist presents an intimate, raw, black and white space, creating a direct and unfiltered dialogue with the audience. A space in which she can look each person in the room directly in the eye and share reflections on what she likes to think of as a universal language: emotion.

LES ARTS FLORISSANTS

Sunday, 1/08/2021 19:30

HANDEL BY CHRISTIE
William Christie is a leading figure in the world of Baroque music. A pioneer who rediscovered and adapted French baroque for the general public, the musical director returns to the festival with Handel’s pastoral cantata Aminta e Fillide. He will be directing the legendary instrumental and vocal ensemble Les Arts Florissants to perform this piece, one of the German composer's most ambitious cantatas, which was first performed in Rome in 1708 as part of the celebrations organised by the Academy of Arcadia that Handel himself was associated with for a time. One of the main objectives of the aforementioned academy was to recreate a pastoral style based on simplicity and moderation, values that are reflected perfectly in this work. The lyrics talk of the love between Aminta, a shepherd, for Fillide, a nymph, with both characters played by the voices of sopranos Jessica Niles and Shakèd Bar. With a slow pace that develops over eleven da capo movements, the impact of each dramatic moment is well characterised by the music, offering a wide variety to the arias in a piece dedicated to the search for love. This evening cannot to be missed by lovers of exquisite baroque.

BEL CANTO IN ITS PUREST FORM
Javier Camarena is one of the leading names in international lyric opera. His performances and golden voice caused an uproar among audiences of music fans at opera houses around the world.  The Mexican tenor is a leading figure for the bel canto of his generation. His polished tones, brilliant starting notes, impeccable colour and expressive performances are notable for their virtuosity and difficulty, and have led to him being regularly cast in leading roles alongside the most important performers in lyrical music. After his début at Festival Castell de Peralada in 2018, with an unforgettable recital at the Carmen Church accompanied by Ángel Rodríguez on piano, Javier Camarena returns this January with a lyrical concert accompanied by musicians from Gran Teatre del Liceu, under the baton of the conductor Guillermo Garcia Calvo. As part of the 35th anniversary celebrations, and to draw the Empordà festival to a close, the tenor has prepared a programme with music by Delibes, Bizet, Donizetti, Mozart and Puccini to delight concert-goers. A high-voltage concert that will be the culmination of an incredible festival  .
