MARIINSKY THEATRE BALLET

The Four Seasons

Thursday, 4/07/2019 22:00

HIGH-FLYING OPENER

The Mariinsky Theatre Ballet from Saint Petersburg will be raising the curtain on the 33rd Castell de Peralada Festival. This will be the first time that this prestigious company, a legend in the dance world, will be showcasing its art on the Empordà stage, presenting two very different programmes. The complete ballet of The Four Seasons with choreography by the young Ilya Zhivoi, also a dancer with the Mariinsky Theatre who regularly takes part in the Creative Workshop of Young Choreographers at the Mariinsky Ballet Festival, will be starring on the first of the two evenings. Zhivoi presents a fresh and modern proposal; a neo-classical ballet with clear, simple and effective staging where the spectral and free-flowing dresses, designed by equally young designer Sonya Vatayan, flow and change colour in each of the seasons and serve to help the narration. With music by contemporary British composer Max Richter on the masterpiece by Antonio Vivaldi, the shapes, textures and dynamic of Vivaldi’s cycle join up with electronic sounds. A meeting between the old and the new. A new choreography of classical yet surprising language. The Four Seasons like you’ve never experienced them.

In the night & others

Friday, 5/07/2019 22:00

Romantic ballet reinterpreted by three of the great choreographers of the twentieth century

A new opportunity to enjoy the best ballet company in Saint San Petersburg, and probably for many, the best in Russia and the world. A mixed programme where the music of Chopin and Liszt inspire three of the great choreographers of the last century.  Chopiniana by Michel Fokie is a clear homage to the Romantic age with its white ballet, light dances of ethereal sylphs and a constant yearning to achieve perfection. In the Night, a short ballet created in 1970, North American Jerome Robbins reconciles a stage in shadow with four of Chopin’s nocturnes through three unique couples. The evening ends with the passionate ballet Marguerite and Armand that Britain's Frederick Ashton created expressly for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev. On the musical base of the Piano Sonata in B minor by Franz Liszt, this ballet inspired by the novel La Dame aux Camélias, is without a doubt one of the most moving of Ashton’s works. The pure academicism and unequalled tradition of the Mariinsky Theatre Ballet make its visit to the festival seen as a major event and unmissable date for classical dance lovers.

From the first steps to the first words, to the first kisses ... Life is made of first times that lead to a series of last times, Charlotte Gainsbourg speaks about herself in her latest album Rest. Uncompromising self-portrait, acclaimed by the international press, as one of 2017 best albums (Pitchfork, The Guardian, The Independent, Les Inrockuptibles…). The album is produced by SebastiAn, from the label Ed Banger, his background in electronic music accorded with Charlotte’s desire for a sound with a disquieting, mechanistic edge.

After having been surrounded in the past by Beck's musicians, on Coachella's stage and around the world, and then Connan Mockasin a few years later, Charlotte Gainsbourg is back on stage.

Nature, music and oenology: No Hay Dos Sin Tres at Finca Malaveïna

After starring in one of the major events on the jazz scene in Spain with their début album Conexión (2017, Taller de Músics), an elegant and exquisite work with Mediterranean and flamenco airs, guitarist Cichuelo and pianist Marco Mezquida have reunited once again in a recording studio. From this new meeting No Hay Dos Sin Tres (Discmedi) has been created, an album with eight compositions created in unison by the two musicians, once again reflecting their authenticity, their mutual admiration and, above all, a shared love for music beyond labels and played with complete freedom. An album replete with bulerías, compositions with Brazilian breezes, a contemporary tanguillo, a nod to the sardana and a dreamy ballad. The title No Hay Dos Sin Tres is in tribute to Paco de Mode and his invaluable percussion in these two works, of which we hope there will also be a third. The idyllic setting of Finca Malaveïna and its magnificent vineyards will host the première in Catalonia of this project on a dream evening in the company of two of the leading creative artists on the Spanish music scene.

MARCO MEZQUIDA PUTS MUSIC TO RAVEL’S DREAMS

On the same stage that hosted the première in Catalonia on the previous evening of No Hay Dos Sin Tres, in Ravel’s Dreams, Marco Mezquida offers a dream journey through the musical and personal imaginary of Maurice Ravel. A dream through the modernity of his legacy and the eclecticism of the music that seduced him: from French Classicism to the Romantic virtuosos; from experimentation with popular music to the influence of his contemporaries and the effervescence of jazz. Alongside percussionist Aleix Tobías and cellist Martín Meléndez, Marco Mezquida offers a personal and unique recreation of the music of the genius Ravel: he imbues it with groove, expands it through improvisation and dresses it with the textures of contemporary music, another example of the great versatility and extraordinary creative ability of the artist. Premièred in 2016, the project captivated both jazz and classical audiences, and in 2017 it became the Ravel’s Dream album. This summer, Peralada offers the opportunity to relive or discover this superb project in one of its most stunning settings, where tasting, music and nature come together once again with Marco de Mezquida and Maurice Ravel as its stars.

CIRQUE ÉLOIZE

NEW PATHS FOR CONTEMPORARY CIRCUS

One of the best contemporary circus companies is coming to the Festival for the first time. For 25 years, Cirque Éloize has been bringing together the art of the circus with other artistic forms and with technology to thrill an audience that seeks entertainment rich in sensations. Some of their creations, such as iD, Cirkopolis and Saloon, have been acclaimed by over 3.5 million spectators and performed more than 5,000 times in some of the 550 cities around the world. Their magical interpretations, created with multidisciplinary artists, fuse circus with music, dance and technology to tell enchanting stories in a completely new way. Hotel is the story of a place and the travellers passing through... where Emmanuel Guillaume brings to life the circus maxim that says “everything is possible”. In a glamorous and timeless art deco world, the different artistic disciplines come together around the human stories of the characters with originality and passion, on a musical base originating in the childhood memories of director and composer Éloi Painchoud, inspired by the rhythms of swing and the smooth voice of Sabrina Halde. Through a client on the top floor as the narrator, we’ll get to know lovers who still don’t know they’re made for each other, improbable travellers and the famous person who changes path to gain a place in the firmament while revealing the depth of their being. Hotel is, then, the story of a place, but it is principally a place filled with stories.

PAUL ANKA

Saturday, 13/07/2019 22:00

The return to the festival of an exceptional artist doing it his way

His career began very early and directly with a hit, a number one, Diana, in 1957, and since them his life has always been linked to music, composing and theatres. Paul Anka is one of the great teenage music idols of the 1950s and early 1960s. True to his image and to himself, Paul Anka returns after a 30-year absence to the festival with his latest show Anka Sings Sinatra: His Songs, My Songs, My Way! A tribute to Frank Sinatra where he will also sing his own great hits, such as Put Your Head On My Shoulder, Puppy Love and Proud Mary. Writer of countless classics that others immortalised such as My Way by Frank Sinatra, She’s A Lady by Tom Jones and This Is It by Michel Jackson, to name just a few, on this occasion the singer of Canadian origin will be dividing the concert between singing some of the classics in his own repertoire alongside great hits by “the voice”, such as Strangers In The Night, New York, New York, That’s Life and All Of Me. Supported by a superb group of musicians, this veteran who embodies elegance promises an unforgettable evening in the purest Las Vegas style.

DIÀLEGS DE TIRANT E CARMESINA

Thursday, 18/07/2019 22:00

A great mediaeval frieze with the intimate nature of a chamber opera

Once again this year, the Castell de Peralada Festival is committed to opera and new creation by hosting the premiere of Diàlegs de Tirant e Carmesina, a new chamber opera focusing on the most intimate episodes of the novel by Joanot Martorell, the ones devoted to the relationship between the two protagonists. In this project, playwright Marc Rosich – who in 2007 adapted the mediaeval novel for Calixto Bieito’s hugely successful theatre production – and composer Joan Magrané – Queen Sofia Award for Composition – take seduction and sensuality as the dramatic mechanism of the idea. The piece takes on the form of variations on the theme of the couple falling in love, and the comings and goings of this relationship from the moment Tirant sees Carmesina for the first time and she seduces him with the famous mirror until their separation and tragic end. As a counterpoint to the couple, two opposing figures, Pleasure-of-My-Life and the Placid Widow, will also appear on stage, performed by the same mezzosoprano. With set and stage design by artist Jaume Plensa, Peralada presents a new look at the mediaeval novel turned into an opera libretto with concise music of mediaeval airs. Promoted by Òpera de Butxaca i Nova Creació, the project is part of the celebrations to mark 25 years of the initiative.

LA FURA DELS BAUS

L'HISTOIRE DU SOLDAT

Friday, 19/07/2019 22:00

THE DESCENT INTO HELL OF A SOLDIER IN WAR

Àlex Ollé presents the furera version of the fable L'Histoire du Soldat by Igor Stravinsky. A shocking adaptation converted into a denunciation and deep reflection on wars today and a call for peace and freedom. Premièred in Lyon last spring to overwhelming public and critical success, the commission to mark the 100th anniversary of the première of the work in Lausanne comes to Spain for the first time thanks to the Peralada Festival. The revision of the work proposes a more large-scale piece than a chamber opera. The devil is presented as the voice of the unconscious, as the alter ego of the protagonist, where good and evil are not external agents to the soldier, but “aspects that make up his personality and a clear example of human complexity”. The production is built on strong cinematographic roots that maintain the original score by Stravinsky, the text by Ramuz, together with passages by Jean Cocteau, Paul Valéry and the heart-breaking suicide letter signed by Daniel Somers, a soldier who was unable to overcome post-traumatic stress after the Iraq war, with which the piece ends. A clear and devastating denunciation of the establishment that invites deep reflection. A unique chance to discover this wonderful show by La Fura dels Baus in Peralada.

Warning: Some scenes contain video images that may hurt sensitive people as well as younger ones.
Not recommended for children under 14 years old

LUDOVIC TÉZIER

Saturday, 20/07/2019 20:00

THE GREAT BARITONE OF WORDS

The name of Ludovic Tézier is present in all the great opera houses worldwide. This prestigious baritone is a reference in his field within the great French tradition, following in the wake of the great Michel Dens, Gabriel Bacquier and Robert Massort. His great versatility means he can sing from Tannhäuser to the Russian repertoire and both the bel canto and the Verdi repertoires. His vocal quality, and the exquisite phrasing and line in the singing, have made him one of the world’s leading baritones and one of the heirs of Piero Cappuccilli, Leo Nucci, Renato Bruson and Giorgio Zancanaro, among others. His performances are rich in lyricism and dramatism, where the text reaches the spectator through extremely clear diction. He is a masterful narrator of exquisite elegance and impeccable technique. His roles never lose their articulation or the careful attention to the meaning of the words, which makes it a luxury to listen to him from the stalls. Born in Marseilles, he was recently named Chevalier des Arts et Lettres for his contribution to the dissemination of French culture. In Peralada, he will be making his début in the intimate setting of the Carme Church with a recital of opera arias and song to delight an audience of music-lovers.

BALLET NACIONAL SODRE

El Quijote del Plata

Friday, 26/07/2019 22:00

A ballet where Quixotic fiction fuses with reality

Julio Bocca took over the reins of this ballet company in 2010 to completely transform it. Under his artistic direction, the Uruguayan company underwent the greatest transformation of its history, opening up the doors to the region and the world and a certain inclusion on the path to excellence. Now, under the artistic direction of Igor Yebra and following in the wake of the Argentinian director, the Ballet Nacional Sodre is making its début in Peralada. For the occasion, the company is presenting a work inspired by the union of the universal figure of Don Quixote with that of famous Uruguayan Arturo E. Xalambrí, a passionate, eccentric and extraordinary character, responsible for Montevideo housing one of the largest collections of books by Cervantes in Latin America. For the ballet, Spaniard Blanca Li has created a choreography full of entrances and exits of Xalambrí’s wonderful library, which houses thousands of editions of Don Quixote, and of the story of the most universal knight. A game of comings and goings showing the parallels between the two characters. As each scene plays out, the place transforms into the different settings that accompany the story of each adventure, inspired by the exploits of Don Quixote, told by Cervantes in his famous novel. With a stunning choreography, this ballet feeds on the music of great composers who based their scores on the literary work. A blend of fiction and fact that recalls the dream climate of the great titles of the classical ballet repertoire.

THE BEST OF PINK MARTINI

The Peralada audience knows them well. In 2014 they presented Get Happy and then returned two years later to celebrate the festival’s 30th anniversary. This year, with Storm Large once again at the helm, Pink Martini returns to the Castell de Peralada Festival in what will be their only stop in the Catalan summer. To mark the anniversary of their famous song 'Je ne veux pas travailler', the band from Portland is presenting its new show, where they will play all their hits and delight the audience with a surprise or two. With over 3 million albums sold, the line-up that perfectly fuses danceable lounge beats with the orchestral elegance of the big bands of the 1940s, music hall and Latin jazz, will again thrill the audience with their universal music of a genuine vintage sound. A concert of songs everyone knows, besides the hits of the multilingual, multicultural band that has created its own style through renewing the classics. The band led by Thomas Lauderdale returns with its festive spirit of always and the sensuality of Large to offer their unmistakeable glamour and joy in this unmissable concert.

Folklore, nature and gardens

Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund has established herself as one of the leading dramatic lyric sopranos on the international lyric scene. Her début in the title role in Rusalka in 2008 at the Salzburg Festival with the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Franz Werner-Möst, won critical praise that gave her the recognition of international audiences and critics. Most outstanding is her superb intensity in her singing, always luminous and sensitive. Alongside prestigious pianist Helmut Deutsche, one of the best song recital accompanists in the world and, it should be said, one of the favourites of the great lyric voices, such as Jonas Kaufmann, Diana Damrau and Michael Volle, she will be performing at the festival to delight lovers of Lied. Right in the middle of taking part in the Bayreuth Festival, in the role of Eva, daughter of Pogner, in Richard Wagner’s opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, she will be making a stop in Peralada to offer a recital focused on the liederabend of Richard Strauss, Antoni Dvorák, Gustav Mahler and fellow Finn Jan Sibelius. Folk Lieder from different countries, where nature, the beauty of flowers and gardens will be very present. A recital filled with beauty that will herald the beginning of a lyric week of the very highest quality.

The tenor of unmistakable style

Joseph Calleja was just 13 years old when he decided that he wanted to be a singer after seeing the film The Great Caruso, performed by the tenor Mario Lanza. Since then, the Malta-born tenor has steadily established his rising career built step by step, savouring every one of the stages that his voice offers him. Today, Calleja regularly performs at such opera houses as the Metropolitan in New York, London’s Covent Garden and the Staatsoper in Munich. Exclusive artist with the prestigious Decca label, he has a lengthy discography, and in 2011 his DVD of La Traviata at the Royal Opera House alongside Renée Fleming was nominated for a Grammy. He will be making his festival début this summer with a recital of opera arias and song in the setting of the Carme Church; the ideal format to be able to savour his pure and luminous voice. A voice that perfectly combines the smoothest and sweetest lyricism, of a heart-rending suffering, with the depth and dimension needed for the great arias of Verdi, Puccini and Donizetti. He himself attributes his success to technique and discipline, but also to constant training. Over time, his voice has gained in body and strength in sharps, but his style continues to be unmistakable.

Sempre Libera: a Traviata that becomes a song to love and freedom
In keeping with the strong commitment to contribute to the Spanish opera scene, the Castell de Peralada Festival presents a new in-house production, once again with Paco Azorín as director and stage manager after the success achieved in 2015 with Otello by Verdi, awarded best production of the year at the Campoamor Lyric Awards. La Traviata (sempre libera) by Azorín seeks to move away from stereotypes and take a 180-degree turn to see and enjoy this love story from a new perspective: that of a liberated woman. As the director himself explains “the empowerment of women in the early twenty-first century has enabled us to see the world through different eyes, with a much more open, global and integrationist vision.” This Traviata presents the protagonist “as a free woman; a free spirit way beyond a superficial or stereotypical view. A woman who doesn’t need advice or protection to be herself at all times, to enjoy the life she wants to lead and to love Alfredo with complete freedom.” Once again, the festival has brought together a top-flight line-up for the occasion, led by Russian soprano Ekaterina Bakanova, one of the stars of today since she made her début in 2015 at Covent Garden in this role, substituting Sonia Yoncheva five hours before the start of the performance, achieving a resounding success thanks to her dazzling vocal power; the brilliant winner of the Operalia 2011 competition, tenor René Barbera – first prize by the jury and also the audience prize – will play Alfredo in Peralada;  and American baritone Quinn Kelsey will play Giorgio Germont, the role in which he made his début at the Royal Opera House in 2016. The Cor Intermezzo returns to the festival alongside the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu led by conductor Ricardo Frizza. A production, where nothing will be what it seems, although the characters will be completely free.

HUMAN LOVE, LOVE DIVINE

Thursday, 8/08/2019 20:00

Handel or how human genius can achieve the divine

The Peralada Castle Carmen Church is once again the perfect setting for Baroque music. Human Love, Love Divine is the title of the concert offered by Núria Rial and Juan Sancho along with Baroque group Capella Cracoviensis conducted by Tomasz Adamus. The concert will be the precursor to a new record, which features the collaboration of the festival. The crossover of the words in the title of the programme illustrates the relationship between the human and the divine where love is concerned. The concert offers a selection of arias and duets for soprano and tenor from the operas and oratorios of G. F. Handel. In this sense, we would hope that the human perspective is present in the opera and the divine in the oratorio; however, this is not always the case, which is precisely the proof of how, in terms of love, the divine and the human go hand in hand and are sometimes even confused. A selection of pearls, the best duets for soprano and tenor from Handel’s meagre production and two of the best Spanish ancient music voices make this an unmissable concert for lovers of Baroque.

AN EVENING FOR ROMANTIC OPERA

It’s no secret that the Castell de Peralada Festival has a profound admiration and weakness for tenor voices. Over more than three decades, nearly all the most acclaimed tenors of every generation have appeared on its stages, and this year sees the return of the great Juan Diego Flórez to the festival. To mark the occasion, one of the most desired and sought-after voices by the best opera houses worldwide, a romantic bel canto tenor par excellence, will be singing alongside young soprano Ruzan Mantashyan on an evening where acclaimed conductor Guillermo García Calvo will be leading the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallés. The exquisite ability in the phrasing and the vocal quality of clear and luminous sharps of the Peruvian tenor, added to the acclaimed musicality and theatrical art of one of the most promising artists of her generation, will win over the hearts of the audience with a programme featuring the best duets and arias of the French and Italian romantic repertoire.

THE MAGIC OF A PRODIGIOUS CONDUCTOR MAKES ITS DEBUT AT PERALADA

His innate talent has elevated him to the category of genius. Resident conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orquesta Sinfònica Simón Bolívar, Dudamel was the youngest conductor to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in the New Year Concert – an event reserved only for the greatest conductors – as well as being one of the most acclaimed conductors of his generation. His live performances captivate audiences and reproduce his philosophy of an optimistic and hopeful life filled with energy. A staunch champion of music education and social development through art, in 2009 he was considered by “Time” magazine to be one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The magic of the Venezuelan conductor will land this summer at the Castell de Peralada Festival, accompanied by the prestigious Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a unique programme that turns it into quite an event: A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Felix Mendelssohn with actress María Valverde as the narrator, and Gustav Mahler’s Titan, one of the most loved and performed symphonies by the great composer. Gustavo Dudamel has stated on several occasions that the first time he listened to a symphony orchestra, he was captivated. He has the same effect on the audiences who attend his concerts.

A date with love in Peralada

Last year’s Festival saw the première of a new stage on one of the terraces of the Hotel Peralada Wine Spa & Golf, hosting the world première of El bis: a cabaret show with Xavier Sabata and featuring the stage management of Rafael R. Villalobos. This year, the festival is presenting a new voyeuristic proposal where the audience of “Blind Date” will be the privileged witnesses to a date between two “stage animals”, a meeting between two artists of very different languages and styles who have come together to create a curious symbiosis with love as its starting point. Together, they offer a musical journey with a synaesthesia of movements and sounds.  Blindfolded, without seeing each other, a chat brings about the meeting of the two protagonists. Sightless, they begin a love story that they will tell without words. Music and movement will be the only languages used by the two protagonists in an austere stage setting. From the spontaneity and freedom of both artists comes this little gem, which combines the style of one of the most acclaimed contemporary dancers and choreographers with the talent and sophistication of one of today’s most established musicians.

A NEW LOOK FOR CUBAN DANCE
Carlos Acosta, the prestigious and acclaimed dancer, star of the film Yuli directed by Icíar Bollaín and based on the dancer's autobiography Sin mirar atrás, published in Spanish by Plataforma Editorial, returns to the same stage where he presented the Spanish première in 2017 of his stunning new Cuban company, Acosta Danza. With a glittering career and countless successes as a dancer and choreographer, his innate talent for dance dazzles again, leading his own company founded in his native Havana. A young and surprising dance company capable of seducing audiences and critics worldwide in just three years since it was founded, where the pointe shoes, the traditional, the modern and the post-modern fuse completely naturally throughout the movements. Acosta Danza is, without a doubt, synonym for diversity, modernity and freshness. Crossover, fusion and a lot of dance come to Peralada this summer with choreographies such as Twelve by Jorge Crecis, Imponderable by Goyo Montero, by whom audiences can also see a new as yet untitled choreography, Mermaid by Sidi Larbi and Two by Russell Maliphant, the last two performed by Carlos Acosta himself exclusively for the Festival.

The voice of the great soprano will pay homage to the great diva of the festival.

In the evening of 18 July 1987, a charity concert at the Carme Church entitled Mozart for Africa  – nocturnes, songs, canons and motets by the classical composer – by the great soprano Montserrat Caballé was the star of the opening day of the recently premièred Castell de Peralada Festival. However, Montserrat Caballé did not just open the Festival with her participation and vocal beauty, but together with Carmen Mateu, she dreamt of and had the idea for the cultural initiative in the Peralada Castle Gardens. In the early editions, the soprano from Barcelona took part assiduously in recitals, concerts and staged operas, becoming a key figure in the international projection of the Empordà festival. Peralada also became her home.
Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, undisputed queen of the MET, is in the very top flight of the international lyric scene. Acclaimed and recognised in all the major opera houses in the world, she made her début in Spain in 2007 in a lyric gala in this festival. Since then, the North American soprano has won the hearts of the Peralada audience on four occasions. This year, she returns invited to star in the homage that the festival is paying to its most international diva. With a programme of songs and opera arias, Sondra Radvanovsky returns to the Carme Church, where she starred in a high-voltage recital in 2011. Past and present meet in some way on the stage of the Carme Church, the little gem of the mediaeval Castell de Peralada that so fascinated Montserrat Caballé.

A fusion between the roots and the contemporary for an electrifying close

For the first time, Peralada is electronic and symphonic at the same tempo.  From the universal sound to the synthesiser. From Strauss to club music. From the violin to the beat box. This is MAESTRO: a unique show that journeys through and pays homage to the history of electronic music of the last 30 years through the mix between images of the club culture, a symphony orchestra and dance musicians live. “MAESTRO, Where dance music becomes classical” is the result of an unprecedented fusion. Advanced, eclectic and avant-garde music represented by electronic music, fused with the beauty, delicacy and inimitable identity of classical music. The great hits of dance music orchestrated by a symphony orchestra of over 80 musicians and artists performing hits by Laurent Garnier, Daft Punk, Avicii, Tiesto, Derrick May, David Guetta, Bob Sinclar, Moby and Robert Miles, and many more, all combined with images that marked an era. MAESTRO will turn the Castell de Peralada Festival into a huge party in honour of the electronic culture. A unique show where the audience will go on a journey through time from the sounds of space, through the sound of the first heart, to the present day.
