BÉJART BALLET LAUSANNE

Ballet for life

THE JOY OF LIVING
Ballet For Life or Le Presbytère is much more than a dance show with music by Queen and Mozart. It is a striking and moving autobiography, an explosion of emotions and hidden feelings by one of the great masters of contemporary dance. The piece is dedicated to famous figures who died young, such as the lead singer of the British group Queen, Freddy Mercury, and a man who was much more than the first male dancer in his company, Jorge Donn, who both fell victim to AIDS at 45 years old. Le Presbytère n’a rien perdu de son charme, ni le jardin de son éclat, the full title of the work, first premièred at the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris in January 1997 and is still one of the most striking pieces in the history of dance. Béjart himself described it as “a cry of anguish from young people for whom death by love is yet another problem on top of so many wars, wars that have not stopped around the world since the so-called end of the last world war”. Through carefully chosen lighting, a perspective filled with optimism and brightly coloured costumes designed by Gianni Versace, Béjart shows us disinhibited youth in a perfect combination of humorous ingenuity, brilliant technique and a carefree way of seeing life that is under threat, all to a musical backdrop of Cosí Fan Tutti by Mozart, and Queen.
The festival opens its 35th edition with Ballet for Life or Le Presbytère, a performance about death that is ultimately an ode to life, an act of love. Ladies and gentlemen, the show must go on.

THE BEAUTY OF THE SWAN
The Barcelona Ballet makes its début at the Festival Castell de Peralada with Perpectives, a newly created piece based on the figure of its artistic director Chase Johnsey, an artist who has broken new ground in the world of classical dance by revolutionising the strict gender norms that have always been inherent to this artistic discipline. A voice over and a few simple props on a long catwalk are the only clues as to the meaning of this ‘Swan Lake’. Chase Johnsey introduces us to some of the stereotypes that dancers, just like everyone else, are often forced not to question in order to continue fitting in with preconceived ideas enforced by our society. Through this performance, the Catalan dance company invites us to embark on a journey through a world of struggle, dreams and transformation, based on the iconic figure of the swan and Tchaikovsky’s music.

Dance Gala

Friday, 23/07/2021 22:00

THEY DANCE AND THE WORLD MOVES WITH THEM
The festival is getting all dressed up to commemorate its founder—lover and patron of the arts, Carmen Mateu. This performance brings together five women in tribute, five dancers whose talent and perseverance has led them to dance at some of the most important companies in the world. Monica Hamill and Iratxe Ansa, the directors of the gala event, have invited Lucia Lacarra (principal dancer at the Bayerisches Staatsballett from 2002 to 2016 and winner of the National Dance Award 2005), Dauris André (principal dancer at the San Francisco Ballet), Ada González (soloist at the Bucharest Opera Ballet) and Maria Khoreva (soloist at the Mariinsky Ballet and winner of the first edition of the Carmen Mateu Young Artist European Award) for the occasion. Iratxe Ansa, winner of the National Dance Award 2020, will also take to the stage to round off a fantastic quintet. But they will not be dancing alone. They will perform alongside Matthew Golding (principal dancer at the Royal Ballet from 2014 to 2017), Xander Parish (principal dancer at the Mariinsky Ballet), Jorge García Pérez (soloist at the Basel Ballet) and Igor Bacovich (dancer, choreographer, and founder of Metamorphosis Dance together with Iratxe Ansa). With current stars and up-and-coming prodigies from renowned international ballet companies, the audience can expect spectacular excerpts from modern dance pieces and grand pas de deux from world-famous, iconic pieces from classical repertoire, ranging from classics like Giselle to more recent choreographies by Christopher Wheeldon and Myles Thatcher. An incredible, unique evening that highlights the transformative power of dance and women, in one of the most challenging periods in the history of the performing arts.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT
Unfollow the Rules is the title of Wainwright's new studio LP, his first pop album since 2012. The album shows an artist at the peak of his powers, entering artistic maturity with passion, honesty and a renewed confidence in which he is still as creative and complex as ever. Produced by Mitchell Froom in a range of legendary Los Angeles studios, the album marks an end to the first act of an extraordinary career that, like Unfollow the Rules, began in Los Angeles studios, while also ushering in the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Inspired by middle age, married life, fatherhood, friends, loss, London and Laurel Canyon, songs like ‘Only the People that Love’ and the energetic and symphonic ‘Hatred’ find this talented singer-songwriter taking on new challenges, while forced to confront his past—making sense of how he has grown both in his role as a musician and as the happy family man he has become. The album was preceded by a single, ‘Trouble in Paradise’, a rhythmically complex song that was received with great acclaim by the international media, and received unanimous critical praise. The musical genius returns to the festival with a concert that is pure Rufus Wainwright. Accompanied only by his piano and guitar, this performance of Unfollow the Rules, along with his most popular hits, will be a concert that his most devoted fans cannot miss.

PUCCINI’S CELEBRATED OPERA WITH A ALL-STAR CAST

Since 1900, this opera has always one of the five most frequently performed works in the entire repertoire, as audiences love this masterpiece by the composer of Luca. The combination of brutality and lyricism, narrated with a great sense of rhythm and dramatic upward tension, in addition to the intensity and complexity of its characters, make this opera one of Puccini’s most striking pieces. The work, which is set in the context of a Rome in full upheaval, swarming with Napoleonic troops, speaks of love, faith, blackmail, desire, death, corruption, and the different feelings that guide the protagonist trio. Floria Tosca is at the centre of a musical drama that shows great realism and psychological strength. The careful instrumentalisation and melodic strength, reinforced by Puccini’s superbly crafted acoustic environments, transport concert-goers from the church at Sant'Andrea Valle to the rooms of the Farnese palace or the terrace of Sant'Angelo castle, all while giving clues to the events to come. Sondra Radvanovsky, Jonas Kaufmann and Carlos Álvarez have been cast as the trio leading an exceptional cast for this performance. Supported by the choir and orchestra from the Teatro Real in Madrid, and under the musical direction of Nicola Luisotti as the conductor, this concert version of Tosca will be a memorable event for opera fans.

OPERA FOLLOWERS

OPERA FOLLOWERS, COME IN AND SEE
Opera Followers is a humorous recital, a brief but intense historical tour through famous songs from lyric opera, aimed at a young audience who are curious about what opera really is. The master of ceremonies is a youtuber who invites us on a journey through an unknown, distant musical world, progressively moving through the musical universe. The Peralada gardens will act as the backdrop to a meeting point between seemingly antagonistic languages—a fusion between two ways of understanding art. Mezzo-soprano Olga Syniakova and bass Manuel Fuentes will give their voices to the performance, and these winners of Extraordinary Prizes at the Festival Castell de Peralada Tenor Viñas 2020 and 2021 Competition have already had a big impact on the international opera scene. With the goal of bringing this musical genre closer to the public through different arias from the history of lyric opera, Albert Estany has produced a dynamic show that is reminiscent of Cirque du Grotesque in its rhythm and style. Come in and see for yourself.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS EXPLORED THROUGH THIS ICONIC HERO
Orlando, written based on the libretto by Carlo Sigismondo Capece for L'Orlando, overo, La gelosa pazzia by Domenico Scarlatti (1717), which is in turn based on Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto (1532), is the first of three operas by the English composer of German origin based on the epic poem, and was composed for the Royal Academy of Music in 1733. This year, Rafael R. Villalobos has been commissioned to create a new opera production, and he will return to Peralada to direct another Handelesque work.  In honour of the occasion, the festival brings together a cast of acclaimed voices, including countertenor Xavier Sabata (Orlando), soprano Sabina Puértolas (Angelica), baritone Jose Antonio López (Zoroastro), Marie Lys (Dorinda) and Eve-Maud Hubeaux (Medoro). They will be accompanied by the Baroque music ensemble Vespres d’Arnadí, conducted by Dani Espasa from the harpsichord. The young, accomplished regista  from Seville focuses the plot on the love triangle between Angelica, Medoro and Dorinda, three characters usually played by women. Drawing links to Orlando: A Biography (1928) by Virginia Woolf, and The Hours, Michael Cunningham's 1999 Pulitzer Prize winning novel that was brought to the big screen by Stephen Daldry, Villalobos delves into Orlando as “an intimate array of characters, especially the trio of female protagonists, who are under the constant shadow of the hero onto whom they project their own desires”. This bright, musical performance plays with literary and cinematic references, and aims to capture the essence of the world created by the Bloomsbury Group and their influence on contemporary culture.

LISE DAVIDSEN

Saturday, 31/07/2021 19:30

THE WAGNERIAN VOICE OF THE MOMENT
Lise Davidsen is now one of the most sought-after names in leading opera houses, following her international breakthrough in 2019 with a dazzling début at the Bayreuth Festival and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, with a stunning first solo record released by DECCA. She was awarded first prize in the Operalia and Queen Sonja awards in 2015—a preview of what was to come. Davidsen has been lauded as the Wagnerian voice of the moment, and is one of the most accomplished lyrical-dramatic sopranos performing today. The Scandinavian singer has a fresh, brilliant voice.  Her magnificent voice has a seductive timbre, and her vocal projection, as well as her great technique and expressive interpretations—thanks to her loyalty to the text and sense of narrative—have won over audiences and critics alike, gaining her more fans at every performance. Her recent performances as Elisabeth in the Tannhäuser at the Bayreuth Festival, and as Leonore in Fidelio at Covent Garden alongside Jonas Kaufmann, were both unforgettable. She has often been compared to Nilsson in her high notes, and to Norwegian Kirsten Flagstad in the richness of her lower range. But the truth is that Lise Davidsen is hailed as the next great lyrical singer of both Wagner and Strauss, although she has assured us that “there is life beyond Wagner.” Her voice has been heralded as one of this century’s greats, and this summer she will perform at Festival Castell de Peralada in what is sure to be a spellbinding recital.

SILVIA PEREZ CRUZ

Saturday, 31/07/2021 22:00

NO FILTER
Sílvia Pérez Cruz’s latest record is titled Farsa (género imposible), or in English, ‘Farce (an impossible genre)’. The album is mainly made up of new compositions, created by her, in dialogue with other artistic disciplines such as theatre, dance, cinema, poetry and painting. The album shows the artist's exploration into the duality of what we show and what we really are. It looks into how the fragility of our inner selves, and intimacy, can survive during current times when the surface layer is so devastating, when what you see can get confused with what you hear. But her voice, one of the most astounding to have appeared in recent times, always rings true. Without reservation or false pretence, this concert provides possible responses to the questions posed above, and offers a deep journey into the self through music. With special collaboration from dancer and choreographer Andrés Corchero on stage, the artist presents an intimate, raw, black and white space, creating a direct and unfiltered dialogue with the audience. A space in which she can look each person in the room directly in the eye and share reflections on what she likes to think of as a universal language: emotion.

WILLIAM CHRISTIE

LES ARTS FLORISSANTS

Sunday, 1/08/2021 19:30

HANDEL BY CHRISTIE
William Christie is a leading figure in the world of Baroque music. A pioneer who rediscovered and adapted French baroque for the general public, the musical director returns to the festival with Handel’s pastoral cantata Aminta e Fillide. He will be directing the legendary instrumental and vocal ensemble Les Arts Florissants to perform this piece, one of the German composer's most ambitious cantatas, which was first performed in Rome in 1708 as part of the celebrations organised by the Academy of Arcadia that Handel himself was associated with for a time. One of the main objectives of the aforementioned academy was to recreate a pastoral style based on simplicity and moderation, values that are reflected perfectly in this work. The lyrics talk of the love between Aminta, a shepherd, for Fillide, a nymph, with both characters played by the voices of sopranos Jessica Niles and Shakèd Bar. With a slow pace that develops over eleven da capo movements, the impact of each dramatic moment is well characterised by the music, offering a wide variety to the arias in a piece dedicated to the search for love. This evening cannot to be missed by lovers of exquisite baroque.
