Triple Bill

Thursday, 2/07/2020 22:00

THE DEBUT OF A COMPANY WITH A DIVERSE CHOREOGRAPHIC STYLE FORGED IN EXCELLENCE

In 1969, a troupe of fifteen young dancers made their début on the stage of the Sam Houston State Teacher’s College in Huntsville, Texas. Thus was born the Houston Ballet; a company that has steadily evolved to become the fifth largest ballet company in the United States. In 2003, acclaimed Australian choreographer Stanton Welch took over the artistic direction, since when the Houston Ballet has undergone a considerable transformation, raising its level of classical techniques, introducing works by renowned choreographers into the repertoire and recruiting new talents into the company. On its first visit to Catalonia, it is coming to the Festival Castell de Peralada as part of the Spanish tour to mark its 50th anniversary. With this Triple Bill, the company will be presenting its stage identity through three choreographies: Clear, an abstract ballet by Welch with music by Bach and costumes by leading fashion designer Michael Kors, created in 2001 for the American Ballet Theatre of New York after the 9/11 attack. An explosive choreography of huge emotional impact brimming with spectacular pirouettes, leaps and impressive spins; In Dreams, a fantastic and impressive dance created by Trey McIntyre to the music of Roy Orbison; and Nosotros, set to Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 by Rachmaninoff, it is an abstract piece by Welch, a brilliant celebration of classical technique displaying the present and future stars of the Houston Ballet in one of the favourite works of audiences and critics alike. The Festival is opening the best way: by maintaining its idyll with this art of a majestic beauty.

PURE DANCE IN MUSICAL MOVEMENT

With choreography by the artistic director of the Houston Ballet, Stanton Welch, and with the pieces for piano of Frédéric Chopin, Sons de lâme premièred on 31 October 2013 at the prestigious Théâtre des Champs Élysées in Paris, the same theatre where Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes presented the creation of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, with choreography by Nijinsky. With sixteen Houston Ballet dancers and prestigious concert pianist Lang Lang, the ballet displayed a unique collaboration between dancer and music. A show of pure beauty that is coming to the Festival Castell de Peralada this year after conquering audiences and critics alike. A sublime and traditional work with the musical basis of Chopin (nocturnes, ballades, waltzes, etudes, etc.) performed live by a pianist. Sons de l’âme is a choreography that highlights the company's transformation, raising the level of classical technique combined with a renewed energy, drive and vision. An inspirational and thoroughly hypnotic experience for a summer’s evening.

AN EVENING OF LYRICAL APOTHEOSIS

Jonas Kaufmann is synonymous with the grand occasion. A leading star on the world opera scene, the great tenor has never wanted to limit himself to any one repertoire, as he has shown in his various participations in this festival. In 2015, now a world celebrity, he conquered Milan's La Scala with one of the most eagerly-awaited performances of his career: a concert of arias by Giacomo Puccini. The performance was immortalised in An Evening with Puccini directed by Brian Large and produced by Arts Alliance. This year, Jonas Kaufmann returns to the Festival Castell de Peralada with a programme that will alternate orchestral pieces with some of the best arias and duos in the Puccini repertoire. For the occasion, the German tenor will feature the participation of Italian soprano Maria Agresta and the trusted baton of conductor Jochen Rieder at the helm of the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès.
He is the most sought-after tenor in the world. She is one of the leading international lyric sopranos thanks to her technique and prestige on stage. Together, they will pay tribute to the Italian composer in a night to remember.
