A BUTTERFLY TRAPPED IN TIME
Its story and a music that cut straight to the heart and the emotions have turned this piece into one of the most iconic and key operas of the classical repertoire. The “Japanese tragedy” of the maestro Puccini lands in Peralada under the watchful gaze of stage director Joan Anton Rechi, in a co-production between the Festival and the Deutsche Oper Am Rhein. Rechi, who has surrounded himself with loyal collaborators for the occasion – Mercè Paloma has designed the wardrobe and Alfons Flores is responsible for the stage design – presents a disturbing and emotional Madame Butterfly set in the poetic universe of destruction. The story, set in the darkest period of the city of Nagasaki during the Second World War, turns the tragedy that affects the female protagonist immersed in desolation into a collective tragedy, which affects all the characters in the story. As is usual, the Festival has brought together the leading lights of international lyric singing for the opera event of the summer: Albanian soprano Ermonela Jaho, the Madame Butterfly of our day, will be Cio-Cio-San in Peralada. Alongside her, American tenor Bryan Hymel and baritone Carlos Álvarez will be the US Navy lieutenant B. F. Pinkerton and Sharpless, US consul in Nagasaki, respectively. Both singers will be appearing together again after having opened the new opera season last December at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan with the same work by Puccini. Girona mezzo-soprano Gemma Coma-Alabert, resident artist this year at the Castell de Peralada Festival, will be playing faithful servant Suzuki. The cast is completed by tenor Vicenç Esteve Madrid as Goro and the emerging baritone Carlos Pachón, winner of the Castell de Peralada Festival Extraordinary Prize at the Francesc Viñas Singing Competition, in the role of Prince Yamadori. The Chorus of the Gran Teatre del Liceu returns to the festival and conductor Dan Ettinger will be conducting the Orquestra Simfònica de Bilbao in what will be his début in Spain.
